Tom Cruise plays Civil War hero Capt. Nathan Algren, who comes to Japan to fight the Samurai and ends up pledging himself to their cause. Ken Watanabe (Academy Award nominee) plays Katsumoto, a Samurai leader facing a vanishing way of life, whose destiny becomes intertwined with that of the American captain. Pure Epic Filmmaking. 2003's Cinematic Triumph is now the DVD of the Year! - 5 out of 5 (7/22/2004)
Now here is a film that defines the term epic. From the perspective of a filmgoer who truly appreciates that of both adventure movies and those with a huge level of dramatic effect, The Last Samurai offers the best of both worlds at equal doses. As far as big time epics are concerned, this may go on record, for my money at least, as one of the best ever made.

Good acting, great movie! - 5 out of 5 (5/26/2004)

This film showed me the culture which in my young life thought was just a story people tell their children about. The story of this movie had opened up my eyes and let me see things that couldn't be told by books or any other movies that I've se

Sits nicely beside Braveheart and Gladiator. Awesome movie! - 4.75 out of 5 (5/24/2004)

I easily put The Last Samurai right beside Braveheart, Gladiator, and other top action movies that actually make you care. I was most surprised by the paid critics when it came to this film. I say this because I do have a friend who didn't like it because he expected non stop slashing of swords and didn't care for a plot but I thought paid critics were supposed to care about a movie having a
